Get It Together!
... but you don't have to do it all today.
By Gary V Carter
A typical depression presses in when circumstances that are, or seem, uncontrollable shake you loose from your normal life or expected routine. Sometimes depression comes because of the cumulative effect of broken expectations over time. There is no other way to see it. Depression is not pleasant.
Even when the expected results of your life for diminished by the loss of some relationship or resources there is still more life to experience. It is up to you to find the best of what remains. The easiest thing to do is to lay down on the couch and hope that the depression will go way. That never works. Let me repeat, that never works. Your heart is playing a trick on you if you believe that. It may be that others around you are reinforcing your right to lay on the couch. But you can do better.
Somewhere between superstar-like energized activity and laying on the couch is the reality that you need to find. To start with don't expect to stray far from the couch. Set the bar low. Just decide to do one positive thing. Then you can decide what the next positive thing will be that you do.
Congratulations! If you are depressed you have already decided to do one thing, your reading this article. Good for you. Repeat after me, "Good for me!" Now I don't expect if you are depressed that you feel other than hypocrisy saying, "Good for me!" However, it is good. Say it often enough and in time you will start to feel it again.
There are many things that you can do to help you out of your depression.
You can do research on the Internet as you are doing right now. But actually, that might not be the best approach. Instead, get down to your local public library and ask the librarian to help you find a simple book for people who are depressed. Explain the you're not looking for a textbook but something in terms that ordinary people can understand. Who knows? You might start up the new friendship with the librarian!
Since you are here on line right now, look for a good ebook on the subject of depression. Now let me give you some tips. Ebooks are usually shorter than a book you will find in the library. That should be music to your depressed years. The other fact is that since ebooks are much more current they are also much more expensive. However, most vendors of the books are willing to give you a money back guarantee. If you don't honestly believe that the price you paid was worth the money, then ask for your money back. You can't stay in business very long on the Internet if you don't honor your word. So you can be sure that any guarantee is highly likely to be honored.
Above all, find someone to talk to about your mood. You will probably find that if you have a friend you trust you will articulate things you didn't even know you were thinking. As you talk things through you will understand your circumstances and the potential for the rest of your life much better. Use books and videos to give you the technical knowledge and even some practical tips on how to proceed. But make sure you don't go it alone. You need a friend. Don't simply retreat into the realm of "virtual friends" on the Internet but make sure you have "reality friends" who sit with you and listen as you share your thoughts and feelings.
To overcome your depressed state you need to start to think differently about real-life. Life is a one-way ticket. You are not going back. So while you need to think about what went wrong to get you into this depression, you need also to start to think about the future once again. The future is not as bright as you wish it would be. But it is definitely not as dark as you fear.
For example, regardless of your life experience you are likely not the first person to go through something like this. Don't waste your experience. Look forward to the day when you can positively share with others and help them overcome the dark days of their depression. If you can find a good friend today you will be well on your way. And then you will learn something about how to be a good friend for someone else in another day yet in your future.
